Clifftop cactus garden above the sea
At the very top of Èze-Village, where the old castle ruins give way to open sky, the Jardin Exotique takes over. It’s a remarkable place – hundreds of cacti and succulents planted across the rocky summit, with the Mediterranean below stretching to the sun-drenched horizon.
The garden was established in the early 20th century among the ruins of a medieval fortress. The combination of ancient stonework and improbable botanical abundance gives it a character unlike anywhere else on the Riviera.
Giant agaves reach overhead. Barrel cacti crowd the path edges. Natural shapes that look like sculptures catch the light, more like art than flora. The views are the headline, though – the panorama sweeps from the Italian coastline to the Estérel mountains, with the sea filling every gap in between.
The garden is at its best in the morning, before the village below fills with visitors. Arrive early, take your time at the top, and you’ll have the kind of experience that makes the rest of the day feel like a bonus.
