Historic Paris district of boutiques
Medieval streets meet modern energy in Le Marais. This is where Paris feels most like a village – narrow lanes, hidden courtyards, and buildings that lean slightly, as if they've been standing so long they've earned the right to slouch.
The neighbourhood survived Haussmann’s grand redesign of Paris in the 1800s, so the streets still twist and surprise you. You’ll find 17th-century mansions next to vintage boutiques, kosher bakeries beside contemporary art galleries.
Place des Vosges is the calm centre. Paris’s oldest planned square, built in 1612, with perfect symmetry and arcades that offer shade on hot days. You could sit under the trees, watch locals play pétanque, maybe grab a falafel from L’As du Fallafel on Rue des Rosiers – still the best in the city, still worth the queue.
At night, the bars fill up. Cocktail spots with no signs. Wine bars where the owner pours from bottles they've chosen themselves. This is where Parisians come when they want to feel like they've discovered something.
