Village built from vivid ochre stone
Roussillon village rises from an ochre cliff in the Luberon, its houses painted in shades that sweep from pale yellow to deep rust-red. It’s not just a decorative choice – the landscape beneath them is saturated with ochre deposits, making the settlement feel as if it’s risen from the ground itself.
The Sentier des Ocres (Ochre Trail) winds through former quarries just outside the village. Two marked paths – one short, one longer – cut through cliffs and canyons where the earth glows orange, crimson, and burnt sienna.
The contrast against green pines and blue sky is striking. Just wear shoes you don't mind staining: that vibrant dust clings to everything.
The village centre is a tight cluster of lanes climbing towards the church and castrum ruins at the summit. Art galleries and ceramics workshops occupy the ground floors, their work echoing the colours outside.
Come early or late. The ochre tones deepen in low light, and the lanes empty out enough to feel like the place is yours for a little while
