Medieval abbey framed by lavender fields
Three kilometres north of Gordes, the road narrows, and sun-baked fields of lavender begin to appear. The turn-off to the abbey is easy to miss – but find it, follow it, and you’ll find an elegant building waiting for you, cradled in a fold of the Luberon hills as if the valley grew around it.
Sénanque has been home to Cistercian monks since 1148. That’s nearly 9 centuries of the same quiet rhythms: prayer, work, silence. You can feel the quietude for yourself the moment you arrive. Shielded by valley walls, the noise of the road drops away.
In high summer, the lavender rows sweep right down to the abbey walls, contrasting vibrantly with the honey-coloured cloisters of the minimal church. But Sénanque earns a visit in any season, for its unassuming beauty and steadfast history.
As a working abbey, the Sénanque is not always open to visitors, so double-check the website before you go if you’re keen to join a guided tour.
