Cannes's historic yacht-filled harbour
You’ll find Cannes' old harbour at the western end of the Croisette, where working fishing boats share water with yachts that cost more than most people’s houses. The contrast is Cannes in miniature: modest Provençal life rubbing against outrageous wealth.
Early morning, fishermen unload their catch at the Forville market just behind the port. By mid-morning, yacht crews polish chrome and teak on vessels moored stern-side along the quays. The boats range from modest sailing yachts to floating mansions with helipads and crews in matching polo shirts.
Ferries to the Îles de Lérins depart from the western jetty throughout the day. The boats are practical and functional. Everyone pays the same fare, whether they arrived in Cannes by bus or by private jet.
Restaurants line the Quai Saint-Pierre, their terraces facing the water. The menus lean towards seafood: bouillabaisse, grilled sea bass, platters of shellfish on ice. Prices reflect the location and the view – we'd say both make it worth it.
