Visit a small island with big history

Flatey is the largest island in Breiðafjörður and a lovely place to visit in summer. Once a thriving monastery and trading hub, it later became a centre of culture and learning. Many old houses remain, so you’ll find the island has a timeless, peaceful charm.

Flatey is traffic-free and small enough to explore on foot. Walking its grassy paths, you’ll pass colourful cottages, a tiny library, and stunning coastal views. It is also a haven for birdlife – look out for puffins, arctic terns and other seabirds nesting nearby.

The Baldur ferry crosses Breiðafjörður daily and stops at Flatey during the summer months. It is the perfect detour if you're travelling between the Snæfellsnes peninsula and the Westfjords.
