Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre

The centre of culture and music in Reykjavík

Iceland’s premiere concert hall and conference centre, Harpa was opened to the public on 4 May 2011. Designed by Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in collaboration with Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, construction of Harpa began prior to Iceland’s 2008 financial collapse and was halted at the time of the collapse when the developers were bankrupt.

The Icelandic government decided to fund the remainder of the construction and the resulting structure is a steel framework clad in geometric shaped panels of coloured glass, outfitted with exterior lights that mimic the glow of the northern lights.

Harpa houses the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Opera, as well as a café, restaurant, Icelandic design store Epal. Tour of the building are available daily.
