SMELL THE ROSES ON A RELAXING WALK ALONG EXOTIC GARDENS
Give your senses a treat at the Botanic Gardens of Belfast, located between the River Lagan and Queen’s University Belfast campus.
This large expanse of green was first established in 1828 by the Belfast Botanic and Horticultural Society. The Botanic Gardens were opened as a public park in 1895 and remain popular today with residents and visitors. Every year, the gardens host events and concerts.
When it was first opened, the gardens contained exotic tree species and a range of plants from the southern hemisphere. Today, as you roam the grounds, you may be able to still spot some of them.
Two of the highlights of the botanic gardens are the Palm House and Tropical Ravine. The Palm House is a Victorian glasshouse designed by Sir Charles Lanyon. It contains a collection of tropical plants and other seasonal displays.
The Tropical Ravine contains some of the oldest seed plants in the world today. This includes bananas, cinnamon and orchids. Both buildings were built in the second half of the 19th century.
The gardens are open daily throughout the year.
