Derry City Walls

Londonderry is the only completely walled city in Ireland. That means that out of all 30 remaining walled towns in Ireland, this is the one to visit if you want to see a fine example of intact walls.

Sitting along the River Foyle, the 17th-century walls also include 7 gates. They are located on what used to be the Island of Derry and measure around 1.6 kilometres (1 mile) in circumference.

There are 2 ways to visit the Derry Walls. You could roam around the exterior of the Walled City, the Dry Moat. Exit from New Gate and walk all the way to Butcher Gate. Along the journey, you’ll pass the 3 surviving bastions (a “bulwark” or protruding section of a fort).

You can also walk the top of the ramparts. Wander along the elevated promenade to admire the views over the city below.
