Itinerary

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

  • Day 1: Welcome to Dublin

Touch down. Dublin is ready for you. Meet your private driver at the airport and sit back and enjoy the ride to your hotel. Then? It’s time to head out to explore.

Start with a visit to Trinity College to see the ancient Book of Kells. Stroll along the characterful O’Connell Street, with its Georgian architecture, and stop off at one of Ireland’s most famous buildings, the General Post Office. Pop into the Guinness Storehouse for a taste of the world-famous beer – it’s a must while visiting the capital.

In the evening, head to the Temple Bar district. Traditional music floods the streets, locals dancing merrily. It’s the perfect way to round off your first day in Ireland.

    Spend the night in Dublin.

    Included:
    • Private transfer from Dublin Airport on arrival

Attractions Attractions Attractions Attractions Attractions Attractions Attractions Attractions See activities for this day
  • Day 2: Guided walking tour of Dublin

Today’s agenda? A walking tour of Ireland’s capital city. Your private guide will take you to all of Dublin’s top sights, sharing stories and local anecdotes. The tour can be tailored to your interests on the day too.

Picture marvelling at the beauty of St Patrick’s Cathedral. Or why not wander along the River Liffey to take in the famous bridges? Continue south to St Stephen’s Green to check out by the Little Museum of Dublin or the National Museum of Ireland.

If you head west, pass the Guinness Storehouse and head to Kilmainham Gaol, for a walk down many eras of Dublin history.

    Spend another night in Dublin.

  • Day 3: Tour to the Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher are breathtaking. Out-of-this-world. Like nothing you’ll have seen before. And they’re yours to explore today, with your guide.

You’ll enjoy a full-day tour of the iconic cliffs, journeying through the Wild Atlantic Way and the Burren. Expect panoramic views of the Atlantic stretching out before you, dotted with the Aran Islands. This is a day you’ll want your camera for – trust us.

You’ll get the chance to briefly explore the colourful city of Galway too, before heading back to the capital for the evening.

Spend a third night in Dublin.

  • Day 4: Journey from Dublin to Edinburgh

Say goodbye to Ireland and head to bonnie Scotland. You’ll enjoy private transfers to and from both airports, so you can sit back and relax. Once you’re checked into your hotel in Edinburgh, it’s time to get exploring.

Take a stroll through the city, along the Royal Mile and around the Old and New Towns. There are also plenty of museums and landmarks to visit within the city centre, including the majestic Edinburgh Castle. And, of course, there’s a seemingly endless supply of restaurants to choose from at dinnertime.

    Spend the night in Edinburgh.

  • Day 5: Journey to the Highlands

Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel and whisk you up north, into the Scottish Highlands.

Make a detour to the picturesque village of Dunkeld or the 13th-century Blair Castle. Further north, you’ll drive through the Cairngorms National Park where you could visit the Highland Folk Museum.

Inverness is your day’s destination, but nearby you could visit the Battlefield of Culloden Moor, to see where the last battle on British soil occurred in 1746. Or stop by the Clava Cairns, a series of tombs and standing stones dating back roughly 4,000 years.

Spend the night in the Inverness area.

  • Day 6: Loch Ness & the Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is calling today. It’s beautiful – genuinely – but the journey there is almost as incredible. Soak it all up as your guide takes the wheel.

Loch Ness glistens, its waters mysterious. Take a boat trip and search for its elusive resident, affectionately nicknamed Nessie. Urquhart Castle stands on the loch’s shores, a ruined memory of one of Scotland’s most iconic strongholds.

Eilean Donan Castle is also worth a visit before you reach Skye.

Once you’re on the island, enjoy your first glimpse at the incredible scenery. The Cuillin ridge, imposing. The jagged peaks. Sheep wandering untroubled. And the narrow roads hugging lochs and sweeping slopes.

Spend the night on the Isle of Skye or nearby.

  • Day 7: A day on the Isle of Skye

Skye is all yours to explore, with the help of your private guide. You could start the day in Portree for a short visit, before heading north to the Trotternish Peninsula first. Here it’s all about jagged rocky outcrops and hills like you’ve never seen before.

The Old Man of Storr pinnacle is walkable if you’re feeling adventurous, but it’s just as incredible to look from lower ground. The Kilt Rock waterfall is jaw-dropping, its waters tumbling over the cliffside into the frigid sea below.

The Quiraing rock face, the An Corran Beach at Staffin, and the mystical Fairy Glen are also all worth a visit.

  • Day 8: The wonders of the Sleat Peninsula & Glenfinnan

Head to the lush, green Sleat Peninsula this morning. Along the way, your guide will stop at the crystal-clear Fairy Pools at the foot of the Black Cuillin Hills. Whisky lovers will want to visit a distillery to learn about how the golden nectar is made.

In the afternoon, you’ll take a ferry over to the mainland. If you’re lucky, you might just spot a dolphin or two on the crossing. Then, it’s on to Fort William.

Make a stop at Camusdarach Beach and Glenfinnan on your way. Harry Potter fans will recognise the Glenfinnan Viaduct as the iconic railway bridge the Hogwarts Express takes every year.

Spend the night in the Fort William area.

Your guide will drive you through the iconic Glen Coe today. It’s earned its nickname as Scotland’s most scenic valley, and you’ll soon see why. You’ll also pass through the Trossachs National Park, around the shores of Loch Lomond.

A great stop is Doune Castle, which you might recognise from Monty Python & the Holy Grail or Outlander. If time allows, you could also stop by Stirling Castle or the Kelpies, two impressive horse-head sculptures.

Soon enough you’ll reach the country’s capital. Edinburgh comes alive in the evening, patrons spilling out of bars onto cobbled streets, city lights twinkling under the darkening sky. Say goodbye to your guide, find a restaurant for dinner, and settle in.

Everything you need to know about this tour before you book.

We recommend that you read carefully through the following information before booking this private tour in Scotland and Ireland. We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions here so you know what to expect. You’ll also find more practical advice and attraction recommendations in our online Scotland Travel Guide and Ireland Travel Guide.

On a private tour with Nordic Visitor, you can sit back and enjoy a curated itinerary, led by two personal driver-guides. One guide will take you around Scotland and one Ireland.

Your guides will be experts in Scottish and Irish history and culture. They’ll share their local knowledge and stories with you, and take you to hidden gems across each country. They will also be happy to tailor your journey to your unique needs and interests along the way.

Your experience will also begin and end with private airport transfers.

Depending on availability and on the size of your travelling party, we can offer a range of vehicles, such as premium executive cars, 4-wheel drives and touring vans.

During the booking process, you'll be able to book a group up to 7 people. Should you have 8 people in your travelling group, please contact us.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

Nordic Visitor offers 10–20% deposits so you can reserve your trip as early as it’s convenient for you. The remaining balance is due 30 days before you travel.

Many tours are also open for the following year if you like to plan well ahead. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us

We recommend adding them now to secure your spot, as popular excursions often sell out. And we suggest booking no more than one additional activity per day for the best experience. You can also add up to 3 extra nights at the beginning or end of your tour.

Not quite every day, and that is by design.

In Dublin you stay at the same hotel for three nights. Your Irish guide will collect you from there for full days of exploration. In the first instance, to discover the Irish capital on foot. And again for the drive west to the Cliffs of Moher and Galway. You come back to the same bed each night and have your evenings at your own pace.

In Scotland, it works slightly differently. Your Scottish guide travels with you as you move between overnight stops in the Highlands: from Inverness across to Skye and on to Fort William.

In between, a few days are yours alone. Your arrival day in Dublin, your travel day to Edinburgh, and your final morning are all free (and any extra days you might want added in). We’ll include our recommendations on what to do each day, so you’re never alone – but ultimately you pick what you want most.

And if anything comes up, our 24/7 helpline is there whenever you need us.

To find out which dates you can start your trip on, navigate to the "Find your price" section on the tour's page. Under "Tour start date", you'll see a calendar symbol. Select this and you'll see all the available dates to start your tour.

If you can't select a certain day, this means there are no departures available then. In that situation, please get in touch and one of our travel consultants will look into the options for you.

So when do you check in? And what can you expect upon landing in Dublin?

After picking up your luggage, make your way to the arrivals hall, where the driver of your private transfer will be waiting for you. They’ll welcome you to the country and take you straight to your accommodation in the city centre.

Check-in times vary between hotels and guesthouses, but it normally starts between 2–4 PM.

You are welcome to request an early check-in for an additional fee. Although this isn’t always available, you’ll be able to store your luggage at the hotel if you have to wait. Please contact your travel consultant well in advance of your arrival if you’d like an early check-in.

Arriving on different flights? The arrival transfer included is for one specified flight per group. That’s because our drivers aren’t able to combine guests arriving on different flights due to risk of delays.

Just let your travel consultant know if that’s the case and they can add more transfers for each flight to your package, at an extra cost.

Your Irish adventure with us begins the moment you land at Dublin Airport. Make your way to the arrivals hall, where a driver will be waiting to greet you. From there, you’ll enjoy a comfortable ride in a private vehicle to your accommodation in the city.

When it’s time to fly to Scotland, a private car collects you from your hotel and takes you to Dublin Airport. On the other side, another driver meets you at Edinburgh Airport and brings you to your accommodation. All the convenience for one smooth journey.

On the day of your departure from Scotland, a private car will pick you up from your hotel in Edinburgh. Your driver will then take you straight to the airport in time to catch your flight home. These drivers will be different from your private guides.

If you feel you have received an outstanding tour experience, tips are very welcomed and appreciated.

During your Scotland and Ireland tour, you’ll stay in accommodation hand-picked by our local travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and our personal experience.

For this package, you can choose from single or double rooms. Twin, triple and family rooms are not commonly available in Scotland and Ireland. Please also note that local room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double room often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. And single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

Due to the historic nature of the properties we usually select, most of the rooms are only accessible by stairs. Lifts are not common in Scottish and Irish hotels. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are not able to walk up stairs.

There are limited laundry facilities in Ireland and Scotland’s countryside. You will find some laundrettes in the cities like Dublin and Edinburgh. Some hotels do offer dry cleaning for an additional cost.

Scotland and Ireland are beautiful all year long. That said, it’s good to be aware that the summer is the high travelling season, with July and August being peak months.

This means many of the highlights, such as Edinburgh, Dublin, the Isle of Skye and the Ring of Kerry will be extremely popular and might have limited availability. This could impact your booking of attractions, accommodation, restaurants, excursions and more.

For a more relaxing experience, we recommend booking your tour, plus any extra excursions, activities or entrance tickets, well in advance. You also might prefer to arrive during the shoulder season, which is during April–June and September–October.

If you do wish to travel in July or August, we will be happy to help you plan your trip to make it as smooth as possible.

Summer in Scotland and Ireland might be warmer than you expect! While temperatures are unlikely to reach higher than 20°C (68 °F), heatwaves can be humid. This means it can feel hotter than it is, especially in cities like Dublin and Edinburgh.

That said, the weather is also very changeable, so you’ll want to come prepared for anything. Rain is always a possibility, and when the sun sets a warm jumper or jacket is a must. We’ve prepared a useful packing guide for Scotland and Ireland to help you decide what to bring with you.

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit. If something unexpected occurs, you can call our 24/7 helpline to speak directly with a Nordic Visitor staff member.

Whatever time of year you’re in Ireland and Scotland, you’re likely to see lots of different types of weather. As you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors it’s a good idea to come prepared for a combination of weather conditions.

Here is a recommended packing list for a summer trip:

    • A warm jumper or fleece
    • A waterproof jacket
    • Good walking shoes or boots (especially if you intend to hike and go on nature walks)
    • Light scarf or thin sweater
    • Reusable water bottle
    • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a sunhat

In some areas of Scotland, such as the Highlands and islands, you might notice small, pesky insects called midges. They’re most active on summer evenings and tend to swarm near still water. You can avoid bites by wearing long-sleeves and trousers and by packing an insect repellent.

For more information, check this packing list suggestion.

Your breakfast is included at all your accommodation in Ireland. For the rest of your food, your spending money will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

Budget between €15–€20 per person for each day’s lunch. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between €20–€25. Meanwhile at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay €50–€100 or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

We’re here to help make sure your trip goes well – and that includes eating well. Just let us know your dietary requirements when you book and your travel consultant will factor them in from the start. Whether that’s an allergy, intolerance, lifestyle choice, or anything else. Breakfast is included at your accommodation each day, and we’ll make sure your needs are flagged in advance. Typical breakfast spreads include baked goods, cheese, jam, yoghurt, cereal, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee, so there’s usually a good range to work with. For lunches and dinners, most places are used to accommodating different requirements. Just let the waiting staff know when you arrive.

Vegetarian options are widely available, and gluten-free awareness has grown significantly in recent years. Vegans may find it more of a patchwork depending on the destination, but easier in cities and larger towns, patchier in rural areas. If you have a severe allergy, it’s always worth communicating this clearly and, where relevant, having a short written note explaining your needs in the local language. We’re happy to help you put one together before you travel.

Yes, we highly recommend getting travel insurance for your trip.

There are numerous insurance providers online, offering policies with varying levels of coverage. These will protect your finances in the event of illness or other medical emergencies, lost or damaged luggage, flight cancellation, trip curtailment, theft and much more.

Whether or not you need a visa to visit Scotland and Ireland depends on your nationality.

You need either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK. This also applies to citizens from countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia and the EU.

This does not apply to Ireland, but if you’re staying in Northern Ireland (which is part of the UK) or tranferring via a UK airport, you’ll also need an ETA.

You can find the complete list of countries whose nationals require a visa to enter each country on the website of the UK government and the website of Ireland’s Citizens Information Board.

Your passport must also be valid for at least 6 months after the date of your departure (the end of your tour). It’s a good idea to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

All packages starting in Ireland are billed in Euros (EUR), the local currency.

Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. This means conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

When you book this tour, we’ll ask for a 10% deposit to secure your spot. Then you’ve got plenty of time – the rest is due 30 days before you arrive.

Here’s a tip: if you pay a 20% deposit instead, we’ll include our cancellation protection at no extra cost. It's there to give you breathing room if your plans need to change.

Booking last minute? If it’s less than 30 days until your trip, we’ll need the full payment upfront.

Want to know more? Check out our payment and cancellation terms or just get in touch – we’re here to help.

Your remaining balance is due 30 days before your arrival date. Apart from the deposit, all remaining payments are managed through our Customer Portal. On this portal, you also have the option to split your payments if preferred.

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

At that time, they’ll confirm the availability of your tour. Then the booking process starts, which may take a few weeks. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip. You will also receive more information about what to expect during your trip.

You can get in touch with our UK and Ireland travel experts ahead of your trip if you have any questions. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with travel guides packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online regional Travel Guides where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

Once your tour is confirmed, we’ll get to work. Over the following weeks, we’ll put together your itinerary, reserve your accommodation and lock in all your services.

When everything is in place, we’ll send your travel documents by email – so you can read, plan, and get excited for your trip.

Then, when you arrive at your destination, a welcome bag will be waiting for you. Inside: hard copies of your personalised itinerary, our exclusive Travel Guide, and all your service vouchers. Everything you need, right when you need it.

By booking with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that there’s always someone there for you throughout your trip.

For support and advice during the day, you can call our office. And if anything unexpected happens outside working hours, you can reach us on our 24/7 helpline.

During your tour, there will always be a travel expert on call to handle any unforeseen situations, such as unusual weather or events.

No need! Nordic Visitor is already working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours.

Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.
