Castlerigg stone circle

You’ll find it a short drive from the town of Keswick, at the head of the Derwentwater. The stone circle is enclosed in a large field and surrounded by the peaks of the national park.

 

Wander through the 38 stones that form a ring 30 metres (100 feet) in diameter. Constructed in the Neolithic era by farming communities, this monument has stood for more than 4,000 years. Like many other prehistoric sites, its original purpose is unknown.

 

Don’t forget to take photos of the scenic countryside all around. Thanks to its location, you’ll be treated to panoramic views, including of High Seat and Helvellyn mountains.

 

The site is managed by the National Trust and is free to visit during daylight hours. It is especially popular around the summer solstice, when people meet here to celebrate the longest day of the year.
