1. When is the best time to visit Italy from South Africa?

Italy’s best months for visiting tend to be May, June, September and early October – warm weather, long daylight hours, and noticeably fewer visitors at major sites. If you’re flying from South Africa’s winter months, the timing works out well: you swap the cold at home for golden Mediterranean light.

July and August are hotter and busier, but they’re also when Italian towns come alive with outdoor festivals, late-evening passeggiata, and the kind of atmosphere that makes the heat worth it.

2. Do South African passport holders need a visa for Italy?

Yes – South African citizens need a Schengen visa (Type C) to visit Italy. The visa allows you to stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, which comfortably covers all of our tour packages.

You can apply through VFS Global centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, and George. Your passport needs to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from Europe, with a minimum of 2 blank visa pages. You’ll also need travel insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000, along with proof of accommodation and a return flight booking.

3. Is Italy a good destination for a self-drive trip?

Italy is excellent for self-driving – the autostradas are well-maintained and connect the major cities efficiently, while the slower rural roads through Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna are some of the most rewarding drives in Europe. The one thing that catches people off guard is the ZTL zones – restricted traffic areas in historic city centres. We mark these clearly on your route map, along with parking recommendations, so you’ll know exactly when to leave the car and explore on foot.

4. Can I customise my Italy package tour?

Absolutely – that’s one of the things our travellers appreciate most. After you book, your dedicated travel consultant will get in touch to talk through the options. 5. How do I book, and what deposit is required?

You can book any of our tours online, and a dedicated travel consultant will be in touch within 2 business days to start planning your trip. A deposit of 10–20% secures your booking, with the remaining balance due 30 days before travel.

If you choose to pay a 20% deposit, you’ll also receive cancellation protection as part of your booking. This protection gives many of our travellers extra peace of mind when booking months ahead.

6. Are my payments protected?

Every booking with us is covered by EU Package Travel regulations, which means your payments are 100% protected. It’s one of those details that might not sound exciting, but it matters – especially when you’re booking a trip from halfway across the world.

8. What should I pack for Italy?

Comfortable walking shoes are far and away the most important thing in your suitcase. Italian cities are built on cobblestones, and you’ll cover more ground on foot than you expect – especially in Rome, Florence and Venice.

For spring and autumn, layers are your best bet – mornings can be cool, and afternoons warm enough for shirtsleeves. In summer, pack light fabrics, sun protection, and something with sleeves for visiting churches (most require covered shoulders).

9. Can I book flights through Nordic Visitor?

We don’t include flights in our tour packages. This way, you’re free to plan the journey that works for you. You choose your airline, where you fly from, and flight times that suit you.

10. What kind of accommodation do you use?

Our local team selects every property based on comfort, location and character. We work with locally owned hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs that consistently earn strong ratings from travellers. Single, double and triple rooms are available across most packages.

One thing worth knowing: European hotel rooms tend to be more compact than what you might be used to in South Africa’s larger hotels and lodges. It’s a cultural difference rather than a quality one – and it’s easier to accept when your room happens to have a view of a 15th-century piazza.
