Roman history amidst a quaint village

Corbridge is the neighbouring village to Hexham in the Northumberland region of England. Originally built as a Roman town more than 2,000 years ago, Corbridge is now a quaint destination to learn more about England’s past.

The village is characterised by winding streets lined with old buildings that give it its historic charm. The River Tyne snakes through the village and there is only one bridge to cross it. In fact, this single-lane bridge dates back to the 17th-century and is an impressive stone construction.  

The main attraction of the village is its Roman heritage that you can explore at the Corbridge Roman Town. Back in the day, it would have been a bustling centre just south of Hadrian’s Wall, the heavily guarded border with the north.

Today, the ruins are a time capsule of what life was like at the edge of the Roman Empire. You won’t just get to see the foundations of the town, but also admire items left behind by ancient communities at the museum on-site.
