Visit Reykjavik's top tourist attractions

It's one of the smallest capitals in the world, but Reykjavík offers an impressive array of attractions and activities to suit all interests. A stroll along downtown Reykjavík's main shopping street, Laugavegur, reveals a wide selection of cosy coffee houses, quirky shops, lively bars and restaurants with all varieties of international cuisine.

It's no wonder that Reykjavík is the starting point for most Nordic Visitor adventures in Iceland.

No matter the time of year, there's something for everyone in Reykjavík. Embark on a whale-watching tour or wintertime northern lights cruise from the Old Harbour. Take a walk by the shoreline and stop to admire the Harpa concert hall and Sun Voyager statue.

Get a bird's eye view of Reykjavík from Hallgrímskirkja Cathedral's bell tower. Follow a guided walking tour through the city's oldest streets. Relax at a geothermal swimming pool. Learn about Iceland's art scene or early Norse settlers at one of its many museums. It's all within walking distance in Reykjavík's compact city centre.

Many of Iceland's most famous sights, like the Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle, are just a short drive or day tour from Reykjavík. With only a few days to spend in the city, it's possible to visit the nearby rural attractions of West and South Iceland. This includes waterfalls, glaciers, hot springs, mossy lava fields, volcanic craters and more.

A wide variety of guided excursions to the countryside are available year-round. Don't hesitate to visit during Christmas holidays and for New Year's Eve. The celebrations and activities are still aplenty at this time of year.

Why not stay a bit longer and see the whole country? We recommend at least 7 days, preferably 10 days or more, to travel around the Ring Road.
