Your questions about 10-day tours of Italy, answered
Got questions about your trip? Here's everything you need to know before travelling to Italy.
And here’s some peace of mind upfront: when you choose us, you can Book With Confidence, knowing your payments are protected. Curious about the details? You’ll find them in our booking terms and FAQs.
1. What does a 10-day tour of Italy cover?
Depending on the route you choose, a 10-day tour can take you from Rome through Tuscany to Florence and Venice. Or from the glittering northern lakes of Como and Garda to Milan and Verona. Some of our tours even cross into Switzerland by train, where you can ride the Glacier Express and Bernina Express before arriving in Milan.
Plus, you can choose how you want to travel. Enjoy the freedom to experience Italy at your own pace on a self-drive tour. Or get even more insider insights when you join a small group trip led by a knowledgeable local guide.
2. Is Italy a good place for a road trip?
Yes – Italy’s autostrada network is excellent, the scenery between cities is extraordinary, and driving yourself means you can stop at a vineyard in Val d’Orcia or a lakeside café on Lake Garda without any schedule pressure.
The driving is generally straightforward once you’re outside the major cities. Rome and Florence are best avoided by car – we build your itinerary to account for this. We provide detailed guidance on parking, ZTL zones, and toll roads in your personal travel documents.

3. When is the best time to visit Italy?
You can visit Italy with Nordic Visitor between April and October. The best time to go depends on the kind of experience you’re after. That said, the sweet spots are May, June and September, when you can expect warm, long days, and fewer visitors than peak summer.
July and August are the most popular months, particularly in Rome, Venice, and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting in August, it’s worth knowing that Ferragosto (Italy’s national holiday) falls mid-month – most attractions stay open, but it’s worth checking ahead.
October is exceptional for wine lovers, especially around Lake Garda, where Bardolino’s annual wine festival brings music, food and fireworks to the lakeside.
Read our best time to visit Italy blog if you want to plan around a specific season. And check our guide to the weather for an idea of what to expect while you’re there.
4. Is 10 days in Italy enough time for a honeymoon?
Absolutely – 10 days is a popular choice for honeymoons and romantic escapes.
Lake Como, Florence, Venice and the Tuscan hills are among Europe’s most romantic destinations. And you can experience them for yourself on these Italy honeymoon tours. Explore tour packages featuring handpicked hotels and optional extras, including wine tastings, cooking classes for two, and private airport transfers.
5. Can I customise my Italy tour?
Of course, all of our self-drive tours are customisable.
Want to extend your stay in Rome before you hit the road? Or an additional night on Lake Como so you can take the ferry to all Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio at your leisure? You can add these directly during the booking steps.
We also offer a choice of optional experiences you can add to your tour. For example, guided tours of the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Uffizi Gallery, pasta and gelato cooking classes, and Chianti wine tastings.
Get in touch with us if you’d like to ask about a more significant customisation, such as combining two routes or building a longer itinerary.
6. Can I extend my 10-day tour?
Yes, it’s easy to add extra nights to your trip when you book online. Or speak to one of our Italy experts in Rome for recommendations on where to extend your trip.
7. Do I need to book attractions in advance?
We strongly recommend pre-booking for top sites, especially during peak season. Get a time slot that works for you and avoid lengthy queues by booking in advance for these attractions:
- The Colosseum (along with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill)
- The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel
- Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery
- Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper in Milan
Or leave it to us – your Rome-based expert can arrange skip-the-line access and guided tours for all of these as optional extras on most tours.
8. What should I do to prepare for my trip?
Your personalised travel documents will be waiting for you at your first hotel – your day-by-day itinerary, hotel addresses, and insider tips on what to see and eat at each stop. You’ll also have access to your trip information online before you travel via your guest portal.
A few practical things worth sorting in advance:
- If you’re going on a self-drive trip and are a non-EU licence holder, you’ll need to arrange your International Driving Permit
- Pre-book the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and Accademia Gallery if visiting in peak season
- Notify your bank of your travel dates
- Check visa requirements for Italy/the Schengen Area
