Highlights of the Dovrebanen train from Oslo to Trondheim
As Norway’s second highest rail line after the Bergen Railway, the Dovre Railway includes great variations in elevation and terrain. The journey takes you over the over the rugged Dovrefjell mountain plateau and along the beautiful Gudbrandsdalen valley, passing through 8 kilometres of mountain tunnels and making a steep, winding descent down to the Trondheim lowlands.
On the way you’ll enjoy scenery of pristine nature reserves and small towns with traditional log houses. Overall, it’s approximately a half-day journey (7 hours) from the Oslo Central Station to Trondheim on the Dovre Railway (Dovrebanen) train.

It’s also possible to take the Dovre Railway to Ålesund instead of Trondheim. From the Dovrebanen, you would change at Dombås to the Rauma Railway (Raumabanen), which is another spectacularly scenic line with numerous sights to enjoy including the Trollveggen (“Troll Wall”), the Vermafossen waterfall and the beautiful Sunnmørs Alps.
